Cristiano Ronaldo: Being told "too skinny" as a youngster motivated me.

Ronaldo has opened up about his life and his  remarkable rise from a skinny boy whose physique was holding him back, to one of the game's global superstars.

The Portuguese International has revealed just what level of dedication and hardwork it took for him to become one of the best football players in the world.

"You have to work so hard, I do this every day. This is why I have been at the top level for many, many years", said Ronaldo in a promotional interview with the Nike.

Cristiano said, "It's not by coincidence. I do so much extra work outside of the pitch. When I was 12 years old most of the people told me -'Cristiano you are a very talented player but you are too skinny.' So I put it in my mind that my body can improve. With dedication and hard work in the gym I improved a lot on that and at the end of the day it's down to the person's mindset."

The Portugal international joined Manchester United as a slender, winger but he began putting on more and more muscle before departing for his current club Madrid in 2009.

And now the 30 year old is renowned for his sculptured physique and he explained his success is all down to the extra hours that he puts in at the gym.

During the 2 minute promotional  clip the Portugal star also pointed towards his speed  and strength playing a huge role in the footballer he is today.

The Los Blancos talisman added, "Athleticism also means a huge lot - these small details make a huge difference. So it's very important to do this work and it's going really well for me. That's why I'm always in good shape all year round. I do that kind of work, because I have to, it's part of me."

In the last season Cristiano scored a personal best of  61 goals in just 54 appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid.
