Cristiano, 30, is Europe’s and the world’s most marketable footballer and is known by more than 80 per cent of global population, according to a study released on Thursday by market research company Repucom.
According to the marketing firm, the Madrid forward beats England’s Wayne Rooney and Spain’s Andres Iniesta on a new European top 10. Ronaldo's saleability is largely driven by his worldwide popularity, with 85per cent of all men and 80 percent of all women knowing him.
Dutch forwards Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben and Italy’s Andrea Pirlo are in the top six in Europe.
"Sponsors shouldn't just look at the most famous players to market their brands but actually at how perceptions shift between countries and population demographics to ensure the biggest return on their investment," said Andrew Walsh on behalf of Repucom.
Walsh added, "Take appeal as other defining criteria of public perception. Globally, of the percentage of people that know of Gatze (39 per cent), Van Persie (46 per cent) and Ronaldo (83 percent), more women than men say that they actually like these players. In terms of overall marketability, globally, Ronaldo leaves the other European players in his wake.”
Estimates show that Ronaldo earns between 30 million and 35 million euros a year from sponsorship.
Manchester United star, Rooney is known by 54 per cent of people around the world and earns in between 4.5 million and 5.0 million euros each year from sponsorship. Iniesta is known by 48 per cent of people and earns between 2 million and 2.5 million a year in sponsorship.
