Astronomers named the newly discovered galaxy ‘CR7’, after
the football legend, Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese -Madrid forward, Cristiano Ronaldo has been
one of the brightest stars of football for the past decade, and now he is an
entire galaxy.
The newly discovered galaxy was named CR7 by the astronomers
at the European Southern Observatory, and CR7 officially stands for Cosmos
Redshift 7, which is a measure of its place in cosmic time. The astronomers
said that the nickname was inspired by the Real Madrid striker.
David Sobral , who led the team of scientists from the
University of Lisbon, wanted to honour Portugal international Ronaldo and named
the galaxy CR7.
CR7 is "three times brighter than the brightest distant
galaxy known up to now.", the scientists said.
The news, which added
another laurel to the crowns of the legend, flashed the headlines quickly. Lets
wait and see for the next galaxy to be discovered, to be named after the Barcelona
player, Lionel Messi, Ronaldo’s main rival.
